A Servant No Longer

Then it is done. Grieve if you must, but know this: I will remember and I will come to collect.

A New Beginning

Kaylemfein sat alone at the edge of a cliff overlooking the plains of the Azim Steppe. The wind danced along the tall grass of the fields, where tents and yurts dotted the vast, flat expanse. A small smile crept across his face as he watched children racing between the temporary structures, waving makeshift spears and swords at each other and terrorizing the livestock that the Xaela tribes shepherded. This was also the birthplace of the woman he had grown to love more than anything else. While she might have no love for her tribe and wished to separate herself from her past, he had come to understand how much the Dotharl were still a part of her.
He would come to this spot from time to time and reminisce about the days long past—days spent with the Dotharl tribe when he was sent into exile, forced to erase his family’s name and existence from the Hingashi courts for their betrayal of the Emperor and his people.
He had been a loyal servant then, doing what was asked of him with little complaint. Afterwards, he found one group or another to work for, such as the Doman Resistance and other companies, once the Resistance was no longer needed and the focus shifted to rebuilding the Doman region.
He remembered the resentment that began to build. He was always giving so much of himself to lift others up—enhancing their organizations, helping them achieve their ambitions—while always pushing his own to the background.
The Steppes were a place of harmony, almost a perfect spot for meditation. A place to gather his thoughts, discover more about himself, and chart new directions. The region was where he went to heal mentally and spiritually—and to get into a good fight as well. The Xaela tribes never held back against him, and he gave them no quarter in return. They were always eager to challenge him individually. He respected the roaming tribes here: they lived free, servants to no one, and woe to those who sought to take that away from them.
It was then he decided it was time to return home and reclaim what was his. It did not matter how—the ends would always justify the means.
